Service Learning – June 24th

Today we volunteered at a Retirement Home and a Recycling Center. At the Retirement Home, we cleaned the windows and the outside walls, prepared the fruit snack, played cards, dominos, Bingo, and danced with the residents. At the Recycling Center, the students sorted the recyclables and learned more about recycling in Costa Rica. The students had a great time and especially enjoyed interacting with the residents at the Retirement Home.

Today we went to a local school in a poorer area. The majority of the students taught English to increasing age levels. They taught numbers, colors, the alphabet and songs in English. We also played with the children on the playground during their break. Another group of students helped weed the area around the tree garden. They said it was hard work, but very satisfying because they knew they were making a difference in beatifying the school.

Service Learning – June 10th, 2009

We worked at a home for abandoned girls that also offers computer classes to the entire neighborhood because the neighborhood schools are very poor and don’t offer classes in computation. The home has around 16 computers that are used by over 200 students. We cleaned the computers, painted the railings, cleared the rain gutters, cleaned and put together playground equipment for small children, and did overall sweeping. While the work was hard, the students had a good time and were rewarded with Vaca Negras (Root Beer Floats with Coca Cola).
